Helping at Home
Parents and carers are the most important people in children’s lives.
We believe parents and carers are also the most important people in helping their children make the most of school.
Here are ten easy ways to help your child enjoy school and learn more!
- Talk to your child about what happens at school. After the initial ‘can’t remember’ or ‘nothing’ they will start to tell you more! Try asking what their favourite part of their day was or if they did anything new or exciting. Showing interest in school will show your child that school is important and will help them to develop a good attitude towards learning.
- After your child reads, write in their sharing book. This shows your child that reading is important and your child’s teacher will be able to see how they are getting on. Staff also write in these so you will be able to find out what your child has been doing at school.
- Talk about ‘learning’ instead of ‘work’. We try not to use work at school but talk about learning a lot so your child will be more used to hearing this word.
- Read, Read, Read! The school day is very busy and children need more practise reading than school staff can give them. Make reading with your child part of your daily routine. When they start reading their own reading book they need to read to an adult every day. Children who do this become confident readers. As your child gets older they may have other homework, such as spellings. Help your child to develop good habits and routines so learning these becomes part of their normal week.
- Make sure your child has a good breakfast every day. No one concentrates well when they are hungry and some children can become a little impatient with each other as well.
- Always make sure your child has everything they need for school. Book bags and water bottles need to be in school every day. Your child also needs a PE kit to join in games, gymnastics and dance sessions.
- Always make sure your child is at school whenever they can be. It is normal for children to come to school with coughs and colds. If they are unwell we will always call you to let you know but children cannot learn if they do not come to school.
- Always come to school on time. The classroom doors open at 8.50am. Lots of children start learning at 8.50am and they also get to meet and greet their friends. If they arrive late they miss out on these things.
- Remember, growing up, school and learning should be fun and if we enjoy things we all do them better! Always be positive about school as this will help your child develop a positive attitude as well.
- Finally, please come and see us if you have any questions or concerns. It is much easier to resolve these by working together!
